One of the greatest gifts my sisters, my brothers and I received from our father was his love of literature, arts, and language. Sometimes, knowing that someone else liked a certain thing can cause us to take another look at it, puzzle over why they might have liked it. Before we know it, be captivated by ourselves. Literature includes poems often express what we believe to be our thoughts alone, and poets can become our companions as we journey into new worlds of imagination, feeling, and possibility.

Now that I have my own child, I understand in a new way that if you love something, your children will want to love it too. As parents, we have a chance to help our children go beyond us, and to start them off on a lifelong voyage of discovery and self-discovery. I hope literature and arts will become part of my child’s live and everybody’s lives, not only because of the pleasure it will bring, but because the power of ideas, and the ability to express them, is the greatest power we have.

Tumbuh berkembanglah, anakku.
